Southwire Work

Southwire

Southwire makes LARGE cable. Think electric lines and underground 600v cables. I was given the opportunity do an ethnographic study on how workers pushed these large cables through 3 inch holes in the ground. In order to do so I had to create a device that measure the downward force the applied to the cable in both a laboratory setting and in the field.

Two devices, one stationary which we called a "virtual hole in the ground" and the other, a mechanism that attached to the cable and measured downward force.
